Over the next couple of weeks, Meigs County Schools will be providing firearm safety education to all students in grades K–12, as required by a new Tennessee state law passed this school year. The instructional materials were developed by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security in partnership with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
This education will be delivered with the support of representatives from these agencies, along with our district’s School Safety Program and School Resource Officers. The goal of this instruction is to promote awareness, responsible decision-making, and safe behaviors that help protect students and our community.
Firearm-related injuries are currently the leading cause of death among children and teens in the United States. Because of this, providing age-appropriate, prevention-focused safety education is an important step in helping students understand the risks and how to respond safely if they encounter a firearm.
Parents and guardians have access to the materials being shared with students, along with additional resources designed to help reinforce these important safety messages at home. https://www.meigsgschool.net/page/firearm-safety-education
