HONORAIR KNOXVILLE takes WWII, Korean and Vietnam veterans from East Tennessee to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials built to honor their sacrifice. Once veterans return to McGhee Tyson airport, they are welcomed home by a multitude of supporters. Students at MMS took part in this patriotic event by shaking hands with local heroes and speaking “welcome home” wishes to them. 7th grader, Elora Crowder states, “Some of my favorite things about the HonorAir trip was getting to meet the amazing people that served our country. I enjoyed getting to give the Vietnam War soldiers a proper welcome home. Also, it was uplifting to see how happy the soldiers were to see all of us kids there supporting them.” 8th grader, Maddox Lambert, states, “I enjoyed seeing the veterans' faces as we greeted them and knowing what they did for us. I enjoyed shaking their hands and watching their reactions. It allowed me to see how much the experience meant to them.” “Being a part of the ‘Welcome Home Celebration’ for our veterans not only helped me realize how I take my freedom for granted more often than not, but I also realized how a little appreciation can go a long way,” says Mrs. Downey, 6th Grade ELA teacher. Caylee Burchfield, MMS 6th grader, had these thoughts on the trip, “The HonorAir trip was an extremely exciting learning experience. You can meet many veterans who served their country and risked their lives. HonorAir shows good insight on this once in a lifetime experience, and I believe everyone should have the opportunity to meet these wonderful people.”
8th graders spent a week touring Washington, D.C. They enjoyed visits to The Holocaust Museum, The National Archives Museum, Arlington Cemetery, the 9/11 Memorial at The Pentagon, along with many other places of interest in our nation's capital. Also, thank you to Scott DeJarlais for greeting the kids at the Capitol Thursday.
